The Distractions
Here's the deal on The Distractions. Somewhere in the early 1990s Fred Midgett and Mike Ward,
friends and work mates, decided to get together and jam. Both had played in different bands for
years. Both had known each other for years. But this was the first time they ever played together.
Something clicked. Along with bassist Dennis Davis, the trio got together once a week for musical
exercise. Sort of like a musical YMCA. They liked it, but the band was a distraction to their work
and family responsibilities. They kept doing it anyway.
The Distractions weekly "exercise" program continued through the late 1990s and early 2000s.
There were even a few official gigs. But mostly there was just musical exercise and exploration.
There was an intense focus on recording from day one. Fred always felt that everything should be
recorded. Even disorganized first takes and jams. Tape after all was cheep. So there exists a lot of
recorded material, mostly written by Mike. But Fred offered an occasional distraction from the
constant flow of ideas from Mike.
Along the way, several CDs were produced. These were just for friends and family. A convenient
escape from having to buy REAL Christmas presents. A few years back, Fred started using
Distractions songs for the background music of his videos. Recently, believe it or not, there have
been multiple requests (more than 2) for them to make The Distractions music available to the
whole world. So now for the first time they are offering a CD of original music to the public. 10
songs. You even get to hear one of them sing. They do not presume that this is especially great
music or great recordings. It is what they do. They like it. That's enough.
